MBABANE– Eswatini has joined the world in fighting climate change by planting trees.

The campaign was initiated in 2020 and is held every year in March for five years.

The campaign aims to have 1.2 million trees planted over five years to assist and join the world in fighting the inevitable consequences of global warming and climate change the whole world is going through currently.

Minister of Tourism and Environmental Affairs Moses Vilakati mentioned that trees had a huge role to play in combating climate change.

“It is important to plant trees as they play a huge role in combating climate change. A lot of trees are being cut down in the country and no one bothers practicing afforestation.

“This campaign gives people an opportunity to make a difference in the world to plant a single tree out of the 1.2 million that will eventually be planted over a timeline of five years,” said Vilakati.

Vilakati further mentioned that trees will be planted regardless of the heavy rains currently experienced in the Kingdom of Eswatini. “We have noticed that rains are stronger now in February but we will plant trees anyway. The mission is to make a difference as humans towards the earth and we would like every person to make that difference,” said Vilakati.
