MBABANE – Rubbing shoulders with legends!

This rings true for local actress Gcebile Dlamini, now based in Johannesburg, who on Friday had the privilege and honour of rubbing shoulders with South African veteran actress Lillian Dube, who is also a fan of Dlamini’s for her role of Hilda in the South African soap opera Scandal.

Scandal airs on eTV weekdays at 7.30 p.m. on Channel 194. Dlamini played the roles of Aunty Nomalanga on Skeem Saam and Hilda on Scandal.

She is also a director and a writer who won a Naledi Award. Dlamini is a drama mentor at Dumisani Masilela Theatre and director at Johannesburg Independent Community Theatre. She is also a former drama facilitator at the Outreach Foundation Hillbrow Theatre Project. Recently, she was on the panel of speakers for the community theatre at the Market Theatre in Laboratory last week.

Dlamini wrote on her Facebook page about her experience on Friday. It read, “I have never been so humbled in my life. My friend Pascar Fanah Dube drove me to Rosebank today after work. Well, me and Nadi Olothando Mahamba went and decided to walk around the mall with the intention of getting something nice and cold to drink. We ended up doing a bit of window shopping.

I am not so familiar with Rosebank, so Nadi becomes my navigator, and actually, I was walking in corridors I couldn’t recognize. Fine… Then I see someone calling and standing from her chair from inside a store window… Haibo, this is Umama. Lillian Dube nje… I actually saw her walk in from the parking lot. Kanti Umama is going to Vodcasttv. Next thing I am inside, and she tells everyone I have to come in because she loves me too much… She should open the door for me, ningene (to come in); they must stop kancane (stop briefly).

Dube said to me, First thing, you are so young.” The next thing Nadi is doing is taking videos and pictures. Anyway, I was asked to ask her a question that triggered memories for her. But nevertheless, I brought on the laughter…

I’m still so humbled… Umama told me she really enjoys MaHilda. Utsi ke uyakuluma (she said Hilda talks too much), too much lomama.” Dube was referring to Dlamini’s character that she portrays in Scandal.
