AFRICA’S FIRST LARGEST ENERGY PLANT TO SET UP IN ESWATINI

MBABANE – The Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Trade has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Frazium Energy, an Australian company which will soon set up the largest battery plant in Africa in Eswatini.

The E1.5 billion plant will be based at Edwaleni in the Manzini Region and will employ up to 100 people.

It is said the project will be commissioned in 2022 and Phase I consists of a 100MW Battery and Solar plant on a 1 hectare land with 75 000 Solar panels.

Minister Manqoba Khumalo said this is one of the projects reflected in Post COVID-19 Economic Recovery Plan.

“We are truly excited to sign this MoU which denotes that there has been full alignment with all Government Ministries for this project to commence,” the minister said.

He continued: “It is a project that is going to use battery storage to store energy and supply it to the grid in the Southern Africa power pool. They will also be able to have a solar farm that will generate electricity.”

Frazium Energy Director Robert Frazer said: “I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Government of Eswatini for your support and belief in our vision. Eswatini is certainly open for business and we hope for a long and beneficial partnership.”
