AGRI-PRENEUR BUILDING SESSIONS FOR MKHIWENI FARMERS

MKHIWENI – In a collective effort to strengthen the agricultural sector and enhance food security, the Ministry of Agriculture, in collaboration with various stakeholders, organised an enriching engagement session with local farmers at Mkhiweni Inkhundla on Wednesday (June 5, 2024).

The event aimed to equip farmers with necessary knowledge and tools to become successful agri-preneurs and contribute to the nation’s economic growth.

According to information sourced from the Ministry of Agriculture Facebook page, the day-long session covered a wide range of topics, including horticulture, dairy farming, maize and bean production, indigenous African vegetables, and cotton farming. Each session provided valuable insights and practical guidance to the farmers, empowering them to improve their agricultural practices.

The horticulture session explored the difficulties of growing and maintaining various types of crops, with a particular focus on high value produce. The present farmers were introduced to innovative techniques and modern technologies that can significantly better crop yield and quality.

Recognising the value of indigenous African vegetables, the Ministry emphasised their cultivation and consumption. These nutritious and resilient crops were said to have the potential to improve food security while preserving local traditions and biodiversity.

Cotton farming, another significant sector in Eswatini, was addressed in a dedicated session where farmers were introduced to modern techniques for cotton cultivation, including effective pest management strategies and optimising fibre quality. This knowledge will help farmers increase their yields and contribute to the growth of the textile industry.
