MBABANE– A cause for concern!

The alarming numbers of alcohol consumption amongst the youth are a cause for concern for everyone.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has expressed great concern about the numbers of teenagers, especially girls who indulge in alcoholic beverages.

Because of this concern, the WHO will host a campaign that will teach teenagers about the dangers of alcohol consumption.

WHO Eswatini Health Promotion Officer Dr. Kevin Makadzange revealed that there was a noted increase in alcohol consumption, especially with girls.

“This is not a problem affecting Eswatini only but the whole African continent. There is a noted increase in alcohol consumption, especially with girls which is all very worrying.

“This is the reason why we will embark on this campaign which seeks to teach about the dangers of alcohol. When alcohol is reduced, other non-communicable diseases such as High Blood Pressure, cancers, liver and pancreas damage not to mention other endless medical conditions related to alcohol abuse,” said Makadzange.

In 2016 after a similar survey was conducted, it was reported that:

  • 25 percent of people drink beer
  • 16 percent people drink wine
  • 59 percent consume other type of alcohol (spirits, other, all)
