EZULWINI – In a groundbreaking announcement at the MTN Foundation Youth Empowerment Programs Cheque Handover event yesterday, Sibusiso Nhleko, Head of Corporate Services at MTN, revealed the launch of the MTN Skills Academy, along with other pioneering initiatives geared towards empowering the youth of ESwatini.
Nhleko enthusiastically disclosed that the MTN Skills Academy, set to commence next Thursday, will offer a comprehensive array of 101 digital courses. These courses, covering diverse subjects, will be provided free of charge and will be accredited by international universities and institutions of higher learning. This strategic move aims to bridge the gap in digital skills, enabling young individuals to thrive in the rapidly evolving global job market.
Moreover, Nhleko introduced ‘The Grand Hustler,’ a unique program designed to empower young entrepreneurs. While specific details about this initiative will be unveiled at a later date, Nhleko emphasized its purpose to connect young entrepreneurs with genuine investors, fostering an environment conducive to sustainable business growth.
Nhleko announced yet another initiative, a construction project aimed at addressing critical infrastructural needs. Nhleko underlined the foundation’s commitment to enhancing local infrastructure, stating, “We still have needs on the ground in terms of infrastructure and many other amenities.”
Speaking passionately about the MTN Foundation’s endeavours, Nhleko highlighted the organization’s focus on personal development, education, entrepreneurship, and digital skills.
“We believe that technology is an equalizer,” he said.
He also stressed the pivotal role of digital platforms, citing the MTN Khanyisa program accessible on the web and Android platforms.
“All the material can be accessed for free. We believe that digital platforms are the future,” he added.
Nhleko underscored the importance of equipping young people with essential skills for the future, acknowledging the evolving demands of the job market. He expressed admiration for similar initiatives abroad, citing a conversation with a Ugandan youth involved in training fellow youngsters in digital skills and linking them with international job opportunities.
In a heartening testament to the power of opportunity, Bongekile Msibi and Zanele Mbatha, shared their success stories as beneficiaries. The fund, aimed at nurturing entrepreneurial dreams among the youth, has undeniably become a catalyst for change in the community.
Bongekile Msibi, a determined poultry farmer, spoke passionately about her journey.
“I raise chicks. I started with only 50 chickens, but now I am currently supplying 500 per cycle,” she exclaimed.
With a E20,000 grant from the Youth Fund, Bongekile expanded her operation significantly.
“I am currently supplying local butcheries and communities. My future plans are to get insurance to avoid disasters. I also want to expand so I can hire more people,” she added, her eyes reflecting her dreams for a prosperous future.
Zanele Mbatha, a trailblazing young woman in the field of welding, stood tall as she shattered gender stereotypes.
“I do welding at Mpaka. I am here to prove that welding isn’t work for only males, but females can be welders too,” she asserted confidently.
Zanele emphasized the importance of seizing the opportunities provided by initiatives like the Youth Fund.
“As new young people getting funds to start businesses, we should take it seriously, the opportunity we are given,” she urged, highlighting the significance of dedication and determination in pursuing one’s dreams.
Their stories echo the transformative impact, not just as a financial boost but as a beacon of hope and empowerment. Through these success stories, the community is reminded of the potential that lies within its youth, proving that with support and determination, dreams can indeed take flight.
