MBABANE – The country’s youth and junior athletes, Nokwethu Nhlabatsi and Mayibongwe Vilakati ruled in the middle distance events in Maputo, Mozambique on Saturday (June 1, 2024).
Nokwethu Nhlabatsi stole the show, as she was unstoppable in the 800m, 1 500m and 3 000m, as she claimed gold medals in the entire event, finishing first in all the events. This was during the Mozambique National Youth and Junior Championships held on Saturday.
Mayibongwe Vilakati was also simply the best in the 1 500m and the 800m as he brought home gold medals. This means the country’s athletes visited the podium finish five times on the day.
The results were confirmed by the Eswatini Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association (EOCGA).
“Junior athletes shine at the Mozambican National Youth and Junior championships. Three gold medals for Nokwethu Nhlabatsi (3 000m, 1 500m, 800m) and two gold medals for Mayibongwe Vilakati (1 500m, 800m),” reads the statement.
The athletes were guest during the championships as the country has also done the same in past championships, inviting the neighbouring country athletes to attend the local championships to give competitions to the locals.
