MBABANE – Numerous Emaswati have been scammed through MTN Mobile Money (MoMo), with fraudsters setting up call centres that imitate MTN Eswatini customer service.

According to information gathered by this publication, the number of scams in Eswatini continues to rise. Scammers are impersonating MTN’s Call Centre Service (922) to carry out a refund scam.  It is said that the scammers are preying on people’s trust in MTN, using their trusted name and logo to defraud people of their money.

MTN’s Fintech Marketing Manager Afi Dlamini said: “We continue to remind our customers not to share their MoMo Pin with anyone, whether it is a friend, family member, or stranger.”

Dlamini urged customers to treat their MoMo wallet with the same discretion they would use with their bank account, and not to fall victim to requests for money reversals, whether they come from a stranger or claim to be from a financial institution.

“We also urge customers to report any attempted scams, whether they were successful or not, to help us identify and report trends to the relevant authorities,” she said.

Dlamini emphasised that MTN Fintech had a comprehensive educational program that uses various channels, including radio programs, radio adverts, SMSes, print media, and social media, to educate customers about fraud prevention and how to identify and avoid scams.

MTN Fintech assured its customers that the MoMo wallet was safe and secure for transactions at any time. However, the company encouraged customers to remain vigilant and never share their PIN with anyone.
