BILLS TO CLOSE GENDER GAP IN ESWATINI PUT TO EFFECT

MBABANE –There is a great move to close the gender gap in the Kingdom of Eswatini.

This has been disclosed by Deputy Prime Minister Themba Masuku today when speaking during the Sensitisation Workshop for Women Parliamentary Caucus on Family Laws.

The Workshop, funded by UNDP, looked into the provisions of the Draft Marriages Bill, the Matrimonial Property Bill & the Civil Registration Bill.

Masuku stated that government is highly committed to closing the gender gap in Eswatini.

“This is realized through the review of outdated national legislations as well as enacting new laws,” he said.

“The Principle of Gender Equality embodies the idea that human rights cannot be achieved without guaranteeing that women and men enjoy full and equal rights, responsibilities, and opportunities,” he said.

Meanwhile, Minister of Justice and constitutional Affairs Pholile Shakantu said the workshop will help participants to make a meaningful contribution on how the bill could help improve the lives of Emaswati.

 “We are gathered here to look into the provisions of these Draft Bills with a view to making meaningful contributions on how these legislative frameworks can improve the livelihood of emaSwati,” she said.

Senate President Lindiwe Dlamini said: “We appreciate this initiative very much because it helps us to have an input before these Bills are actually brought into Parliament.”

UNDP Resident Representative Rose Ssebatindira said UNDP was grateful for the opportunity to have worked with government in the process of the review and alignment of the Marriages Bill of 2021, the Matrimonial Property Bill of 2021, and the Civil Registration Bill of 2021 with the Constitution.
