MBABANE – In a heartening move to support community-based projects in Eswatini, the High Commission of Canada has launched its annual call for proposals for the Canada Fund for Local Initiatives (CFLI).
According to the High Commission of Canada, the CFLI program is intended to finance small-scale, high-impact projects in developing countries, including Eswatini, that align with Global Affairs Canada’s thematic areas of engagement.
It is stated that the program is primarily centred on local initiatives, with projects being selected and endorsed by the Canadian embassy or high commission in Eswatini. The CFLI also seeks to strengthen the bilateral relations between Canada and Eswatini, as well as the recipient country’s civil society, by promoting greater collaboration and backing local efforts.
The High Commission of Canada emphasised that all project proposals must be submitted in either English or French, using the designated application form provided. Applicants must ensure that the application form is completed in its entirety, including the mandatory gender-based analysis, risk matrix, and proposed project budget. Projects will be assessed based on their merit by a selection committee and must be completed by February 28, 2025. In exceptional circumstances, projects spanning two fiscal years (mid 2024 to February 2026) may be approved, contingent on the project objectives and complexity of activities.
It is stated that the project proposals will be kept on file in accordance with their information management policies, and applications submitted after the deadline of June 9 at 23:59 will not be considered. Applications should be submitted electronically to the designated email address, CFLI-MPUTO@international.gc.ca. The Word version of the application form can be requested from the same email address.
The High Commission has stipulated that only proposals that align with at least one of the CFLI thematic priorities will be considered this year, which include but not limited to, gender equality, environmental action, human rights, LGBTQ rights, economic development, and access to justice. With an emphasis on diversity, social accountability, and the empowerment of marginalised communities, such as women and girls, people with disabilities, and those impacted by violence, the CFLI encourages proposals that align with at least one of these vital focus areas, ensuring that community-driven solutions continue to play a transformative role in the development of Eswatini.
