MBABANE – “Building Inclusive Communities for All!”

That’s the theme for this year’s International Week of Deaf People which begins today and ends on Sunday the 25th of September.

National Association of the Deaf Eswatini is championing the celebration of the global week in the country. Speaking on the significance of the International Week of Deaf People, Makhosini Makhubu, who is the Executive Director of the National Association of the Deaf Eswatini had this to say;

“We are a member of World Federation of the Deaf who are celebrating this week. We will also be celbrating for enjoyment in the Kingdom of Eswatini. Government is also aware of the commemoration and our celebrations this week”.

Makhubu remarked that as they work to develop inclusive communities for all in the Kingdom, they feel that public agents like the police do try to help them with services, even though very few of them understand sign language. He noted that the challenges in the health sector are a little more serious since miscommunication can lead to serious consequences like using medication in the wrong way.

Speaking on the theme, Makhubu said that “Building Inclusive Communities for All means that those who are deaf and those who are not deaf should get the same rights and government services.”
