MBABANE – Medals galore!
This best describes what the sports community in the country has been doing since sporting events opened up post-COVID. The most recent addition to the country’s world class medalists is the Eswatini Taekwondo team after winning 5 gold medals in the Korea Ambassador’s Cup held in Johannesburg.
The 7-member team consists of Wandile Maziya, Sihlelelo Matsebula, Khaya Dube, Sivuno Dlamini, Nonnhle Maduna, and Fakazile Nxumalo.
Speaking to Eswatini TV on behalf of the athletes, Wandile Maziya expanded that, “We left on Friday to join this competition in South Africa called Korea Ambassador’s Cup which is hosted by South Africa. We competed against countries like Botswana, Malawi, Zimbabwe and Lesotho where we played so well we came out on top.”
In total, the team won 3 gold medals, 1 silver medal, as well as 1 bronze medal.
“As players we’re transitioning from not being able to compete due to the COVID-19 restrictions. However, as players we tried to do our best to win and we’ve been able to come back withi this,” Maziya added.
The next challenge for the Taekwondo team are the Region 5 Games to be held in Malawi this December.
