MBABANE – The Ministry of Labour and Social Security has issued a statement informing students about a projected delay in the payment of allowances.

The announcement was made by the ministry today afternoon.

The unfortunate delay in payment for student allowances will affect students in the academic year 2023–24. The ministry informed all students studying in local tertiary institutions who benefit from the Government Scholarship Programme (PTET) that payment of student allowances for the academic year 2023–24 for the month of December 2023 will be delayed.

The ministry cited that it experienced unforeseen circumstances that have resulted in the delay of the student allowances.

It was shared in the statement that the ministry is working hand in hand with the Ministry of Finance to speed up the process. The minister assured students of its commitment to ensuring that their welfare is prioritized. The ministry further requested the cooperation of all the students affected and the stakeholders included.

The Ministry of Labour and Social Security also stated that the inconvenience was deeply regretted and that further communication of payment would be done in due course.

It is worth noting that only qualifying students receive the allowance provided by the Eswatini government, which provides scholarships to qualifying students to study either in the country or outside its borders. However, in recent times, there has been a decline in scholarships provided by the local government, which has seen many students miss out on the opportunity to study further after successful completion of high school.
