MBABANE – Fresh from the hype of having his New Year’s crossover set air on Eswatini TV, we caught up with DJ Obsession, who shared with us how the experience was.
The set was shot at Solanis Shisanyama. Born Thabiso Ndwandwe shared with this publication that he was really grateful and happy to have his set air on national TV.
He also revealed that he is working on his debut song, which will be released in March. The 29-year-old DJ is from Mavula Community, under Mayiwane Inkundla, Buhleni. He is also a digital creator, an Afro-House DJ, and a producer.
When reached for comment, he said, “My love for music was revived in my high school days at Mhlume High School. I used to stay with my uncle, who listened to House music a lot. I would steal his music to share with my friends at school, although I wasn’t a DJ yet and I was not into the craft back then. I started being a DJ at Varsity. I would say my love was revived because my dad was a musician who loved music. I believe he passed on that unusual gift to me.
Obsession shared with this publication that he likes a number of DJs locally. “For a choice, I’d go for Russell Essential Mixes; I think he is one of the best DJs I’ve ever heard playing. He is a very selective Deejay; he introduced me to private school Amapiano. Internationally, it has to be Shimza.”
He went on to add, “I’ve always looked up to him; he inspired my craft into what it is today. He has to be my all-time favourite DJ; although Dlala Thukzin is also one figure I’ve been looking up to. Their techniques of playing made me want to be a DJ, and even today, I still watch their live performances to improve my game.”
He further advised up-and-coming DJs and said, “I’d say people should follow their hearts when it comes to venturing into music. People should not go into music for fame and all sorts of attention. Just go there for your passion and love for music. You’ll win.”
