G77 COUNTRIES COMMIT TO END INCOME INEQUALITY

The G77 Member States, including Eswatini, have promised to work together to end income inequalities among themselves.

This was said by Prime Minister Russell Mmiso Dlamini, who was reporting on his official assignment, where he represented His Majesty King Mswati III.

The meeting took place at Hotel Serena in Kampala, Uganda from Monday (January 15, 2024) to Wednesday (January 17, 2024). The meeting was held alongside the 19th NAM Summit. The theme of the Third South Summit of Leaders of the G77 and China was: Leaving No One Behind.

According to the premier, Eswatini, during this summit, emphasised the need for the G77 countries to deepen and strengthen their cooperation and act in solidarity to ensure the creation of inclusive creation of policies and joint action programmes that would respond to the aspirations of the G77 Member States.

He said Eswatini also pointed out the importance of working together, as members of the G77 countries and those from the North, to make sure no one was left behind. He also said there was a need for these countries to develop a financial architecture that would support all countries, especially the least developed nations.

The Group of 77 (G77) countries at the United Nations (UN) is a coalition of 135 developing countries, designed to promote its members’ collective economic interests and create an enhanced joint negotiating capacity in the United Nations. There were 77 founding members of the organization headquartered in Geneva, but it has since expanded to 135 member countries. Uganda holds its chairmanship for 2024, succeeding Cuba. It was established on June 15, 1964 in Geneva, Switzerland.
