MBABANE – Government has injected E75 000 towards sending a 4x100m relay team to the World Athletics U20 Championships to be held in Nairobi later this month.
The team is made up of Menziwokuhle Msibi, Ayanda Malaza, Lihle Ginindza, Bongumenzi Mbingo and Bakhona Sikhondze.
When announcing the fund, Minister of Sports Harries Bulunga said this aligns with government’s commitment to supporting young people in sport and clearing the path for them to make meaningful, sustainable lives for themselves through sport.
“While we celebrate the Sibusisos of today, we are committed to ensuring that the upcoming generation is capacitated and ready to take on the world when their moment arrives. Team, your assignment in Kenya is simple, come back with medals,” he said.
Athletics Eswatini President Zakhele Dlamini said U20 Championships play an important role as a developmental and build up towards elite performance.
“Investing in a relay team like this makes sense as resources can be shared amongst the team while they push and challenge each other,” he said.
Meanwhile, Athlete representative Menziwokuhle Msibi said, “We appreciate the support we have received. We believe we can deliver something great and we are motivated by what Sibusiso did in Tokyo. He has shown us that it is possible.”
Also part of the Team are Coach Muzi Mabuza and official Zabenguni Mkhatshwa. The Team has further received a E10 000 sponsorship from Mula Sport.
