MBABANE – His Majesty King Mswati III commissioned over 75,000 maidens to partake in the time-honoured tradition of cutting the reed.

This important event, essential to the culture and customs of Eswatini, was met with great anticipation and excitement.

Under the guidance of Her Royal Highness Princess Sakhizwe, who conveyed a special message from the King, the Imbali (young maidens) were assigned specific locations for the reed cutting.

The Princess announced that the Imbali would embark on their task at Mphisi Farm and Bhamsakhe.

To ensure an organised process, the younger Imbali will go to Bhamsakhe, while the older ones will cut the reed at Mphisi Farm. This division of labour allows for a smooth execution, while also providing opportunities for the participants to learn from each other.

His Majesty also emphasised on the importance of maintaining exemplary behaviour throughout the journey. With utmost pride in their roles, the maidens were implored to represent their families, communities, and nation with dignity.

One of the key objectives for the maidens is to bring back the finest quality of reed. The King stressed the significance of selecting the best reed to create high-quality liguma (traditional royal regalia), symbolising the nation’s rich heritage and identity.

This annual event not only strengthens the bond within communities but also serves as a vibrant celebration of Eswatini’s cultural heritage. The reed cutting ceremony is an integral part of the country’s history, promoting unity and affirming the identity of the Swazi people.

As the maidens begin their journey, the nation eagerly awaits the fruits of their labour, knowing that their dedication and craftsmanship will contribute to the preservation and continuation of Eswatini’s esteemed traditions.

Meanwhile a number of maidens expressed their happiness for the gifts they received from His Majesty.

Worth mentioning is that Her Majesty the Indlovukazi, has bestowed a significant commission upon imbali this morning to Ngabezweni Royal Residence, where they are set to meet His Majesty King Mswati III.

It is worth mentioning that imbali arrived yesterday at the renowned Ludzidzini Royal Residence in preparation for this significant event.

Imbali’s responsibility does not end with the cutting of the Reed; they will also be expected to transport the Reed to the Ludzidzini Royal Residence in the coming days.

The Reed is a symbol of unity, tradition, and respect within the Swazi culture and adds to the rich cultural heritage of Eswatini.

The nation eagerly awaits the successful completion of imbali’s mission, as it represents a remarkable showcase of tradition and the preservation of cultural practices.

This event serves as a testament to the profound respect and reverence the Swazi people hold for their monarchy and cultural heritage.
