MBABANE – For the love of painting!
It was the picture of Prime Minister Russell Dlamini back in the day, when he was a petrol attendant that trended, that he captured and recreated artistically, that caught our eye. Meet Mfanzile Dlamini (25) from Mankayane Velezizweni. He shared with us his love for art and how he would love to meet the PM and present him with the portrait.
This is what he had to say:
When did you fall in love with painting?
I began drawing when I was in primary school back in 2010. I believe I am a self-taught artist. I am currently studying at Limkokwing Creative University of Technology (LUCT). Drawing is my hobby, and it occupies much of my time. I usually spend at least nine hours doing a single portrait.
What do you focus on with your drawings?
Usually, I draw with meaning. For instance, when I want to spread advice to society or give a warning to a certain group of people, I use drawing to convey a message.
What inspired you to recreate the Prime Minister’s picture?
I have numerous art pieces, but my favourite is the one of our current Prime Minister, Russell Dlamini, because I have a deep meaning behind that portrait.
The motivating story of the Prime Minister shows the power of hard work, determination, and a belief in oneself. From pumping gas at a petrol station to leading a nation, Dlamini’s journey is a reminder that no dream is too big and no obstacle is too great to overcome.
Given a chance to meet the Prime Minister, what would you say to him?
If I were to meet the PM, I would seek his permission to accept his portrait.
How is the art industry in Eswatini? Is there enough support?
Unfortunately, in Eswatini, we face a looming market situation. Our fellow artists do not give us support. Maybe providing art galleries to display our art might alleviate the art challenge in this country. Due to a lack of support, I have come to the conclusion that artists will never live with the arts alone. In order for artists to survive on their talent alone, I believe the media has to play a vital role in advertising and promoting local artists. Also, gigantic platforms like MTN Bushfire accommodate artists at an affordable price.
What advice would you give an upcoming pencil artist?
For upcoming pencil enthusiasts, please don’t lose hope. Press on until you make a living out of your passion.
How much do you charge for your portraits?
For an A4-size portrait, it costs E200.00, and for an A3, it costs E350.00.
