MBABANE – New councillors have been sworn in to municipalities across the country.
Following the presentation of new councillors by Minister of Housing and Urban Development Prince Simelane, the interim mayors and deputies for Matsapha, Manzini, Mbabane, and other towns were sworn in today.
Director of Urban Development under the ministry Gordon Mbuli encouraged the new councillors to work well under the policy which governs their authority.
“We have these statutes which we work with like the Urban Government Act of 1969, the standing orders of Matsapha, as well as the delegation of powers. It is just to remind each other that the delegation of powers document is very important because it guides how the town functions,” said Mbuli when speaking during the swearing in of Matsapha councillors.
His words of encouragement were well received by Interim Mayor of Matsapha Alice Russo.
“We hope to lead the council with accountability, responsibility, transparency, and integrity,” said Russo.
Speaking at the swearing in of Manzini interim councillors, Manzini Interim Mayor Mxolisi Mabuza expressed that they will continue with the good work which the council was already doing in the town.
“There are programmes which were already there, like the Integrated Development Plan (IDP) and others – we will continue from there, making sure that the municipality works diligently towards being a smart city,” said Mabuza.
Some of those who were sworn in today include Mbabane interim Mayor Daphney Mhlanga, Mbabane Interim Councillor Phiwayinkhosi Ginindza, Manzini Interim Deputy Mayor Zinhle Matsebula, and Matsapha Interim Deputy Mayor Steven Motsa.
The term for previous councillors recently ended in October 2022.
