MBABANE- “Bayethe, Wena WaPhakathi!”
This was former Human Rights Commissioner Sabelo Masuku’s first utterance when sought for comment on being appointed as the Judge of the High Court last Thursday.
Masuku was appointed alongside 11 other judges. They were appointed by His Majesty King Mswati III.
Masuku has practised law for at least 28 years. He did his internship with the International Criminal Court for Rwanda in Arusha, he chaired EPTC (Eswatini Post and Telecommunications Corporation) Board. He is also a Board Member at Standard Bank and a Board Member at World Vision. He was once an Acting Industrial Court Judge, Deputy Commissioner Human Rights, Commissioner Human Rights, Acting Judge Industrial Court and Acting Judge Supreme Court
Judge Masuku has also been a member of the Medico Legal Association SA.
When sought for comment, the legal mind said first, it was to say Bayethe Wena WaPhakathi as being a judge is one of the ultimate positions any legal practitioner of age would looked forward to.
“It is an honour and I respect a national duty. This is a new journey for me to explore with diligence,” the former Human Rights Commissioner commented briefly.
The other appointed judges include Judge Mbutfo Mamba, Judge Judith Currie, Judge Magrietha Van der Walt who are all in the Supreme Court, Judge Andreas Lukhele in the Industrial Court of Appeal, Judge Muzikayise Motsa, Judge Velaphi Dlamini and Judge Lungile Msimango who were appointed to serve in the Industrial Court.
Acting judges who were appointed to hold the positions for three months were Mabandla Manzini in the Supreme Court, Thami Dlamini in the High Court and Banele Ngcamphalala in the Industrial Court. Additionally, Lomvula Grace Hlophe was appointed as acting Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
