MBABANE– Eswatini’s fashion industry is ready to not just dip its toes but fully plunge into the world’s fashion scene.
This was revealed by Dala Spaces’ Philippa Thorne who said the fashion scene has evolved significantly over the last years and seen many of Eswatini’s fashion design talent already participating on the international stage showcasing their creativity and designs and being applauded by fashion lovers worldwide, the fashion industry is ripe to reach its full potential.
She further said there was a lack of internal patronage standing in the way.
“A partnership between Dala Spaces and MTN Bushfire seeks to turn the tide and catapult local fashion further into the international stage.
“Through the ‘Wildfire Fashion Show’ held at Malandela’s on Friday, locals were inspired to invest locally by shopping authentic Swati designs for their MTN Bushfire Festival wardrobe as well as ensuring that local designers build their brands for international success in order to raise investor capital,” said Thorne.
Thorne explained that the long-term vision is to garner support for designers and funding so they have more capital to produce collections as well as create opportunities for them to showcase at more festivals and events this year and potentially in other international spaces.
Unafraid to experiment with patterns and colours, local designers made bold fashion statements in the latest collections.
Monte Couture by designer Mbali Shongwe showcased exquisite pieces inspired by deep Swazi roots through the use of texture, colour and unique details to create new, high-end, fashionable couture.
Thorne also pointed out that the support of local fashion brands such as Maverikz is a positive action towards sustainability and equality.
The audience was also given a sneak peek at some of the 2023 limited edition MTN Bushfire Merchandise as well as menswear by local brand Sgonian Republic. Thereafter, a sultry collection from Nomi Studios was showcased for her loungewear, which is all about flowing silhouettes, comfort and style.
Wrapping up an exciting display of authentic Swazi designs was Ntrentre Couture by Nobesuthu Nkambule presenting the ‘Powder Puff’ Autumn/ Winter 23 ready-to-wear fashion-forward and innovative local brand that effortlessly brings the international fashion scene home to Eswatini whilst keeping fashion fun, exciting and sizzling hot.
