MBABANE – The Eswatini Journalism Association is currently holding a workshop to upskill journalists on reporting in unbiased ways that reduce conflict rather than promote it.
Speaking about the training, Journalism Cadet School program leader Jabu Matsebula said, “It is important that we have a very clear and enlightened understanding as media practitioners. We need to understand that when we publish news, its not news that will cause further conflict. For that not to happen, we need to teach each other what promotes conflict, and how will we cooperate and with whom.”
He further detailed that it is important for them to get feedback from the public as to how they can further help the country, as well as what they need us to do better. He mentioned that some of the feedback has been that the public is losing faith in the media.
“The problem of distrust with the media has resulted in people going to find news on the internet, which happen to be raw and filled with hate speech,” added Matsebula.
The workshop will last for 5 days and is attended by various media practitioners as well as journalism students.
