MBABANE – His Majesty King Mswati III is saddened by the passing of Malawi’s Vice President Saulos Klaus Chilima.

Chilima is said to have died with nine others in a plane crash while they were flying to Mzuzu International Airport from Malawi’s capital city, Lilongwe. Malawi’s President Lazarus Chakwera announced yesterday (Tuesday, June 11, 2024) that Chilima and nine others had been killed during the plane crash.

Yesterday, Prime Minister Russell Mmiso Dlamini, on behalf of the King, Her Majesty the Indlovukazi, Government and the people of the Kingdom of Eswatini, expressed his heartfelt condolences for the loss. He directed his condolences to President Chakwera, the Government and the people of the Republic of Malawi.

The premier prayed that the Almighty God comfort the families and relatives of the deceased during this difficult period. According to CBS News, Chilima, 51, and the other passengers had been headed to attend the funeral of the country’s former attorney general when their plane dropped off radar.

Air traffic officials said the plane had been unable to land at Mzuzu airport, about 200 miles north of the capital, due to poor visibility, and the pilot had been advised to return to Lilongwe when the flight disappeared.
