MBABANE – Limkokwing University of Creative Technology held Mental Health Day on Tuesday by organizing an event featuring speakers from various organizations. The event aimed to educate students about different mental health topics and was part of the university’s efforts to raise awareness during Mental Health Month.

The decision to commemorate Mental Health Day was prompted by a concerning increase in the number of university students experiencing mental health issues, leading to tragic outcomes like suicides, often attributed to factors such as depression.

Fisokuhle Mndzebele, the founder of United Against Depression, shared insights in an interview with Eswatini TV on how to assist people dealing with depression and how to identify individuals undergoing mental health challenges. Mndzebele emphasized the importance of recognizing signs such as social withdrawal, changes in behaviour patterns, aggression, and defensiveness. He encouraged attendees to engage with individuals displaying these signs and create a safe space for them to talk about their struggles. Seeking help from health specialists was also emphasized as a crucial step in supporting those affected by depression.

Muzi Masilela, a representative from the university’s counselling desk, spoke about the institution’s efforts to monitor the mental health status of students, especially those facing difficulties in managing their academic responsibilities and other stressors. Masilela highlighted the availability of counselling sessions for students in need, acknowledging the numerous stressors present in the university environment.
