… The Sihlangu captain penned E1m ZESCO Utd deal last week
BY SABELO GWEBU
SOCCER – Sihlangu captain Lindo Mkhonta was in the starting line-up as he made his ZESCO United debut on Saturday.
The Ndola-based side put Green Eagles to the sword with a 3-0 bashing at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium with a brace from former Kaizer Chiefs man Lazalous Kambole and Chanda Mukuka. The game was stopped in the 53rd minute by a heavy downpour on the day with the host leading by a solitary goal and resumed on Sunday for the remaining minutes.
The Zambian giants unveiled the hard-tackling right back last week, signing him on a two-year deal from MTN Premier League log leaders Young Buffaloes in a deal believed to be in the region of E250 000.
The former Malanti Chiefs defender will reportedly earn E40 000 monthly and has reportedly received a signing-on fee of E100 000. For the two years while in Zambia’s Super League, Mkhonta will bank slightly over E1 million. Founded in 1974, ZESCO is one of Zambia’s most successful clubs in history and reached the semi-finals of the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League in 2016 where they lost to eventual winners Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa.
