MBABANE- Camera, lights and action!
Actor, scriptwriter, and art teacher Nqaba Tsela and his students from Lilima Montessori Life High School will be performing an act on a modern adaptation of Shakespeare’s Macbeth at the Theatre Club on November 25, 2022.
This reporter interviewed Tsela on the synopsis of the script. He said he had been working on the script for four months and the pupils are now rehearsing the play.
“I believe Shakespeare was one of the greatest writers and some of the themes are still relevant to this day,” said Tsela.
Tsela mentioned that he believes people will get the message he is trying to bring out in the play.
“Macbeth has so many scenes like murder, tragedy, power and witchcraft. I drew from these scenes to create the modern-day Macbeth.
I have referred the three modern witches from Macbeth as social media, politics and negativity. Tragedies include modern-day fear of missing out and I am really hoping that as people watch the performances they will be able to pick out the modern-day themes.
Tsela disclosed that the play will also have a comic aspect to it so people should go enjoy, learn, and also bring children to the show.
Nqaba Tsela played the role of Siphiwe on ETV’s daily soapie Scandal and was loved for his siSwati accent. He has also acted on Buhle Buyeza and Eswatini TV’s Ekhaya series.
Macbeth is a famous literature piece by William Shakespeare and it is thought to have been first performed in 1606. It dramatizes the damaging physical and psychological effects of political ambition on those who seek power. Eswatini has been studying Macbeth in schools as literature for decades.
