MBABANE – His Majesty King Mswati III calls upon Emaswati to make food security a reality in Eswatini.
Speaking during the dispersal of Emabutfo, which marked the end of Incwala ceremony, the King said Incwala meant that food should be in abundance, hence there were rains during the event.
The King advised that for food security to be realised, there was a need for Emaswati to revive the culture of Lilima. He described Lilima as a custom where people would work together to help each other produce their own food at chiefdom level. That food should be enough to last for a year, according to the King.
He said usually, Lilima started at a Royal Kraal, where people would work together to produce food at the Royal Kraal. According to Eswatini culture, the Royal Kraal is one home that should never run out of food because it is responsible for overseeing the wellbeing of people who lived in the chiefdom under its jurisdiction.
The King said at chiefdom level, the Lilima should start at the Royal Kraal. After the production of food was done there, residents should then help one another to ensure there was enough food for the year in every home in every chiefdom of the country.
After these activities were done around the country, Emaswati would then do the same during the Incwala, an event that would involve the weeding of Royal fields.
