MBABANE – The municipality of Matsapha held a debate competition amongst the high schools in Manzini in preparation for the upcoming World Environment Day on June 5.
Speaking to Eswatini Broadcasting and Information Service (EBIS) Matsapha municipality Public Relations Officer (PRO) Sihle Sihlongonyane said every year the towns in the Manzini Region, including Manzini, Matsapha, Mankayane and Malkerns came together to commemorate World Environment Day. “We celebrate how much the environment is important to us who live on earth,” said Sihlongonyane.
Sihlongonyane said they had activities that educated Emaswati from young children to old people. Activities included debate competition from high school pupils around the schools in Manzini. “We were talking about environmental issues and what role young people can play to ensure the environment is protected and also teach others at their homes on how they can keep the environment protected,” Sihlongonyane explained.
According to the World Environment Day website, the Environment Day is held annually on June 5 to bring together millions of people from across the globe and engaging them in an effort to protect and restore the Earth.
People from more than 150 countries participate in this United Nations international day, which celebrates environmental action and the power of governments, businesses and individuals to create a more sustainable world.
The event has been led by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) since its inception in 1973.
