MBABANE – Mgucisi Dlamini from Mahlangatja was awarded the winner of 2023 Top Maize Farmer again after winning the same prize the previous year.
Represented by his wife, Dlamini walked away with E40 000. The National Maize Corporation (NMC) farmers’ Awards ceremony was held at the George Hotel in Manzini where 18 farmers were expected to win under six categories. The 2nd prize went to Simon Mthunzi then Thembisile Dlamini got the 3rd prize Top Maize Farmer.
According to Africa Press, Dlamini won the same prize in 2022 after supplying 266.17 metric tons of maize.
The website for National Maize Corporation says the aim of such initiative was to incentivise farmers who have produced enough maize to supply the market. It has two categories: Best maize producer category and loyalty category. Under the best producer category, farmers are awarded based on maize tonnages brought to NMC.
It is said in order to be part of this competition, no joining fee or registration is required, but farmers must ensure they bring more maize to National Maize Corporation. All farmers that sell their maize to NMC qualify to be part of the competition.
