… Registration extended to March 10

MBABANE – Cabinet Ministers and Senior Government officials today registered for the upcoming Local Government Elections in different strategic points across the country.
The registration which started on January 17 has since been extended to March 10 from the initial February 24 deadline.
The Ministers included that of Justice and Constitutional Affairs Pholile Shakantu, Housing and Urban Development Prince Simelane, Labour and Social Security Phila Buthelezi, Home Affairs Princess Lindiwe and Agriculture and Acting Minister of Natural Resources and Energy Jabulani Mabuza, among others.
They were joined by Attorney General Sifiso Khumalo, Government Spokesperson Alpheus Nxumalo and Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development Clifford Mamba.
The different voting registration points are in every town council which includes Mbabane, Ezulwini, Hlatikhulu, Ngwenya, Nhlangano and Piggs Peak from 8 am to 5 pm daily.
By the time of compiling this report, no comment could be obtained from the ministry of Housing and Urban Development.
Local Government is provided for by the Urban Government Act 1969, and it is enshrined in Chapter VIII of the constitution. The Ministry of Housing and Urban Development is responsible for local government, which comprises 12 municipalities and 58 Tinkhundla (rural councils) where local authority councillors are elected. The municipalities have revenue-raising powers, as well as receiving regular and one-off transfers from the national government. The local authorities are generally responsible for town planning, environmental protection, water supply and sanitation, waste management and leisure facilities.
