LILONGWE – As schools reopened smoothly yesterday, the Prime Minister Cleopas Dlamini successfully joined other African leaders in Malawi for the Extraordinary Summit of Heads of State and Government.
The 41st summit is themed around “Bolstering Productive Capacities in the Face of COVID-19 Pandemic: For Sustainable Economic Transformation”.
The Prime Minister was welcomed with a banquet with his peers on the eve of the commencement of the Extraordinary Summit. The banquet included other leaders from the SADC region, including South African president Cyril Ramaphosa.
In accordance with the SADC Treaty, the SADC Summit is responsible for the overall policy direction and control of functions of the community, ultimately making it the policy-making institution of SADC.
According to SADC, “The Extraordinary Summit of Heads of State and Government to be held on 12th January 2021 will review progress of the SADC Mission in Mozambique (SAMIM) which was deployed to support Mozambique to combat terrorism and acts of violent extremism.”
This follows an Extraordinary SADC Organ Troika Summit, comprising Heads of State and Government from Organ Troika members namely; Botswana, Namibia, South Africa and the Republic of Mozambique which was held on the 11th of January, the eve of the Extraordinary Summit.
The Prime Minister is expected to return from Malawi soon after the summit.
