PROMOTING INTERGRITY IN ESWATINI’S PUBLIC SERVICE

MBABANE – In a significant stride towards embracing cutting-edge technology and fostering urban development, Mbabane is set to receive 5G connection within 18 months.

This was said by the Minister for Information Communications Technology (ICT) Savannah Maziya during an ICT work shop at Sibayeni Lodge, which was concluded yesterday (Thursday, May 23, 2024). The workshop was made with an intention of familiarising the Members of Parliament (MPs) and senators, who are members of the Ministry of ICT’s Portfolio Committee, on what the ICT Ministry was doing.

It was also aimed to foster collaboration and cohesiveness in pursuit of the ministry’s objectives, highlighting the collective commitment to advancing technological development and digital transformation.

Speaking during the workshop, Maziya underscored the importance of integrity and commitment to public service, asserting that leadership positions should not be exploited for personal gain.

She encouraged legislators to view their parliamentary roles as opportunities to drive positive change and improve their lives and the lives of their constituents.

Maziya emphasised the need to carry out these duties with honour, upholding the trust and responsibility bestowed upon them. She urged leaders to prioritize the country’s best interests and demonstrate unwavering dedication in their efforts to build a better future for Eswatini.

Maziya underscored the importance of acknowledging challenges and accomplishments to facilitate progress and innovation within the ministry. She urged workshop participants to actively seek solutions for the identified challenges and collaborate towards overcoming them.

Maziya also highlighted some notable achievements, including Eswatini Post and Telecommunications’ rehabilitation of four transmitters, enabling radio access in areas like Ntontondozi, Hlatsikhulu, Siteki, and other regions where transmitters were installed.

The minister also informed the legislators about the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Taiwan Government to implement 5G in the entire city of Mbabane, with plans for countrywide expansion. Maziya further mentioned the construction of two computer labs for local schools, outfitted with 70 computers, and ongoing efforts to promote what is known as STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) education, through outreach programs, demonstrating the ministry’s commitment to advancing technology education in Eswatini.

She emphasised that these initiatives signify the beginning of transforming Eswatini into a smart country, enabling it to compete with other nations at the forefront of technological innovation. She announced that 5G implementation would be fully realized within the next 18 months, marking a significant milestone in the country’s digital evolution.

Maziya mentioned the provision of broadcasting equipment to Eswatini TV, further strengthening the capabilities of the ministry’s departments. To ensure effective governance and collaboration, a new board has been appointed, with a focus on selecting individuals who demonstrate a strong work ethic and a commitment to the ministry’s success.
