MBABANE – Eswatini Red Cross Society together with the Ministry of Health, especially the
Health Promotion Unit has capacitated traditional healers countrywide on epidemics.

Speaking on behalf of Red Cross this morning, Nomphumelelo Mbuyane said the traditional
healers were not only trained on epidemics but they were also enlightened on their role within
communities in prevention and control of epidemics and how they can assist during outbreaks.

“We have found out that traditional healers will come across situations where they would realise
that an outbreak needs a health specialists but they would not know who to call because they
do not really have a relationship with health workers. So, we are here to fix that also,” she said.

She continued to explain that they were willing to build functional relationships with traditional
healers so that they would not be afraid to consult them whenever they see anything strange in
their patients.

“We were discussing sicknesses such as malaria and snake bite. We wanted to get information
on how they treat and handle those sicknesses and when can they contact us to intervene,”
said Mbuyane.

Mbuyane disclosed that they were not focusing only on traditional healers but all the important
sectors of the community especially those who are influential. She revealed that this Tuesday
they will be having a session with Pastors
