SPORTS – The exiting sporting season for scholars is upon them.

Eswatini Schools Sports Association (ESSA) President Anthony Mdluli announced that schools sports will begin on Friday, February 24 with athletics across the different zones in the country’s four regions while ball games will start on March 1, 2023. Mdluli said rules for all sporting codes will be released today (Wednesday).

In recent years, schools’ participation in sports has declined and Mdluli, who is also the senior football national team Sihlangu assistant coach encouraged principals to register their schools and participate as education went hand in hand with the physical being of a child.

“To encourage more schools participation ESSA engaged the Eswatini Principals Association) (EPA) and SASA, explaining the importance of school participation. We have also reduced joining fees for competitions and limited the number of days learners are out of school to meet what the ministry of education demands,” he said.

He continued to stress that sports are important for all-round child development and sports give a chance to those not academically bright.

“An academically not bright student can pursue sports and have a live hood as sports are a growing industry and good paying. Sports also develop the child socially,” he added. So far ESSA has two confirmed sponsorships with InstaCash and Scara Thindwa Foundation KFC tournament and is still seeking more partnerships.
