MBABANE – In an attempt to encourage women to engage in sports, the Eswatini Sports and Recreation Council (ESRC) will host a National Women’s Sports Day.
The first of its kind event will be held on Saturday (May 11, 2024) at the Eswatini Football Association (EFA) Technical Centre in Lobamba, starting at 8am. The event is under the theme, ‘Women in Sports Eswatini.’
The ladies will engage in different sporting codes that will be made available by the ESRC.
ESRC Media Officer Dumisani Ntiwane said it was free to participate in the event and they were expecting women to come in their numbers and enjoy the different sporting codes.
Some of the sporting codes to be played on the day include a seven-a-side football, netball, volleyball, boxing, cricket, basketball, rugby, table tennis, teqball and chess among others.
“We encourage corporate companies to form teams and be part of this day. The women will be introduced to different sporting codes that they can play. We observe that women are usually left out when it comes to playing sports.
This will be their opportunity to also learn about some of the sports codes. We believe that women can also play all sporting codes. We long pass the time were there were sporting codes for man only, but now all sporting codes are now open to all gender,” he said.
Ntiwane added that there will be a token of appreciation for those to excel in the form of trophies and medals. He said they were that this initiative is also supported by the Ministry of Sports, Culture and Youth Affairs.
“We encourage the man to also attend the event to show support to the ladies. The event is also open to the young ones, youth and elders,” he concluded.
