Sakhalive JV is a Joint Venture company established by two giant construction firms based in China that is, Yellow River Co. LTD and Sinohydro Bureau 3 Co. LTD. The two construction firms have engaged in various developmental works all over the globe in the fields of hydropower mechanical road construction and related works. The company recently won the contract for the construction of the Mpakeni Dam and Associated Works (including the construction of access roads) through a competitive bidding.

The contract is valued at about E3 billion (US$136 million) and the construction period is 51 months. Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Samson Sithole of Eswatini Water and Agricultural Development Enterprise (EWADE) announced in October that labour hiring for the Mkhondvo-Ngwavuma Water Augmentation Project (MNWAP) will be localised.

According to Sithole, the project will force some 146 residents to relocate and be physically displaced below the reservoir’s maximum functioning level. He predicted that local communities will benefit from the emergence of both formal and informal work possibilities.

“The project is currently 52% complete and is implementing the first phase of relocating homesteads in the impacted area. Local builders who are employed through a Project Employment Committee (PEC) have already benefited from this, he stated.

The construction of Mpakeni Dam is said to provide job opportunities to over 1 000 emaSwati and numerous subcontractors.

Sakhalive JV said they estimated to hire over 1 000 emaSwati in order to improve their work skills by trading their (Sakhalive JV) skills and technology. They said they were already busy with the project.
