MBABANE – It was almost like a scene from a reality show when Sthembiso ‘Sthera’ Kunene went all over Mbabane on Monday, handing out roses to ten lucky people followed around by a videographer documenting the whole thing.

Kunene is an actor and a brand ambassador for South Africa’s Satellite Television Provider known as Open View. Last year, he had a cameo role on the South African soap opera Gomora and a Standard Bank SA commercial. He was also endorsed by Sprite SA.

The video was shot by Melusi Mzion Dlamini, who documented the actor handing over roses. He is seen in the video making his first stop at KFC, where he handed over the first rose to a lady who seemed shocked and hesitating at first as she was not sure what was happening.

Kunene shared with this publication that the idea came randomly after a video he had done before in Mbabane on taking pictures with strangers. “I noticed that a lot of people were not warming up to the idea as much as it was a joke. Their reactions showed that they had enough of the day. So since the reception I got, I thought it would be a great idea to spread love and give out roses just to loosen people up and just make their day.”

Kunene gave out 10 roses. According to him, he would have loved to give me more roses because everyone deserves love.

“Nomvuyo Dlamini, who owns Precious Treats, sponsored me with the flowers because she also told me how much she enjoys spreading love, so I thought it would be a great collaboration,” Kunene said.

When asked who was his favourite recipient, he said:  “My favourite recipient of the roses was Gogo, whom I met and who was with her grandchild. She was so grateful and even gave me blessings for giving her the rose. She also passed it on to her granddaughter just to spread more love, and that was so beautiful to witness. She thanked me and gave me blessings. She also said, I should continue to give out more to people, and God will bless me.”

When asked why he did not hand over the roses on Valentine’s Day, he said: “A lot of people received flowers on Valentine’s Day, and I thought it would be a great idea to do it on a random day when no one expects it, just so I could make their day… It also made sense because February is the month of love. That is also why I decided to do it.”
