EZULWINI – It seems that on top of excelling in academics, St Mark’s High School is also the most environmentally sustainable high school in the Kingdom of Eswatini. St Mark’s was crowned the Green High School of the Year during the 2022 Temvelo Awards held at Happy Valley Hotel yesterday.
Meanwhile, Melusi Mavuso was awarded the Young Eco Hero Award, while Yibutse Green Action was awarded as a Climate Action Champion. The awards were presented by Prime Minister Cleopas Sipho Dlamini.
“Temvelo Awards is a National project that gives us a chance to renew our undying commitment to sustainable development and environmental protection in our communities, places of occupation and the whole country,” remarked the Prime Minister.
“The Kingdom of Eswatini has ratified several conventions on environment and climate change and it subscribes to the UN Sustainable Development Goals, in particular SDGs 6, 11, 12, 13, 14 and 15, in the case of Temvelo,” added Prime Minister Dlamini. He also revealed that the hosting of this project is a clear demonstration of Government’s commitment to promote a clean, safe, and healthy environment; as well as promoting environmental sustainability; showcasing best practices in the environmental space and rewarding those that are making an effort, in line with the above SDGs.
Other winners durrng the 2022 Temvelo awards were: Green Parastatal- ESWADE; Carbon & Energy- Mbabane Municipal Council; Biodiversity Offset- Stefanutti Stocks; Agribusiness- ESWADE; Best Conservation Agriculture Project- Daisy Sikhondze; Environmental Responsive Media- Times; Environmental Journalist- Sifiso Nhlabatsi; Green Business- ESWADE; Green Municipalities- Mbabane; Best Community Natural Resource Management Programme- Ngololweni; Climate Change Champion- Y!butse; Waste Management- RES; Water Conservation- CONCO; Enviro Entrepreneur- Adorable Accessories.
The annual Temvelo Awards seek to recognise organisations and individuals that apply best practices in the environmental, biodiversity and conservation areas, according to a statement from Government’s official social media channels.
