THE REED DANCE – A CELEBRATION OF SWAZI CULTURE THAT LIVES ON THROUGH GENERATIONS

LOBAMBA – The sun was shining bright as the people started gathering in the fields of Ludzidzini Royal Residence, Swaziland. The women were adorned with traditional attire, some wearing brightly-coloured beaded necklaces, while others were dressed in animal skins. Men were also dressed in their traditional clothes.

The event, known as the Reed Dance, is an annual festival in Swaziland that has been celebrated for centuries. It is a celebration of womanhood, a symbol of chastity, and an opportunity for young girls to display their beauty and dignity.

Many people come from far and wide to attend the festival, and this year, several guests brought their children along with them to experience the beauty of Swazi culture.

“I have been coming to the Reed Dance for the past five years, and it never gets old. Every year, I come and ,I have a wonderful time,” said Meshack Mavuso, former Durban Gen actor.

The actor further stated that the Reed Dance is a celebration of the Eswatini Culture an it is every man’s responsibility support what girls are doing.

As the day wore on, more and more people arrived, and the excitement grew. Young girls wearing colourful skirts( Indlamu ) and decorated necklaces began to form lines, ready to dance.

The guests were enthralled by the display, and many of them joined in, clapping and cheering, showing their appreciation for the girls and the Swazi culture.

“I never tire of watching the girls dance with their reeds,” said Meshack , a visiting guest. “It’s a beautiful sight, and the energy and happiness here are contagious.”

The Reed Dance is a unique and special celebration of Swazi culture that will continue to inspire and enrich the lives of those who attend.

  1. Proud to have sent my daughter from South Africa Mpumalanga Matsulu under the Lomshiyo tradition,was so beautiful I watched the entire celebration,thank you to Swazi Tv I watched from Capetown. The girls had fun and were given gifts clothes and many more I so grateful to the kingdom of Eswatini for the generosity and hospitality given to our kids.On the king I briefly say Bayede wena waphakathi Nwele loludze and happy 55 to independence .
