The young maidens are walking back from Mphisi Farm to the Royal Kraal, having cut the ceremonial reed. The cutting of the reed, which happened yesterday, is an integral part of the ceremony, as the whole festival is named after it.

In a manner of symbolism, the cutting of the reed is a practical reminder to young girls of their responsibility to collaborate in the act of building a better nation together. The girls bond through the activities such as walking, cutting the reed and dancing. They get to meet with different girls from all over the country – and they get to validate their unique existence in the Kingdom of Eswatini.

Tomorrow the girls will be resting as they prepare to deliver the reed to their Majesties on Sunday the 4th of September. This will be followed by the Umhlanga Main Day on Monday.
