MBABANE– The Deputy Prime Minister Themba Nhlanganiso Masuku continues to advocate for the use of siSwati in schools and homes.

He ascertained his advocacy yesterday during Elangeni High School’s culture day, where he was a guest speaker.

Masuku said it was easier to show respect and explain yourself when using siSwati.

When delivering his keynote address, the DPM cited the importance of culture and instilling it in the young generation.

Masuku applauded the respect that was shown by pupils of the school, even outside the school premises. He noted that the respect that was paraded by the learners was the product of the teachers.

“I don’t know how many people know the role that was played by culture during the 2021 civil unrest. When people were burning structures, when the King summoned Incwala, emaSwati came out in their numbers, which brought shame and disappointment to those who were spewing bile about our culture. I am talking about the role that has been played by culture to keep this nation together,” he said.

“The King summoned Lutsango for the Marula Festival. When certain individuals were speaking against attending the event, it looked as if people wanted to participate even more as we kept on receiving more transport requests. If it weren’t for culture, we wouldn’t be seeing the unity and peaceful nation we have.” he added.

Masuku further stated that the 2023 Sibaya was also another proof that emaSwati were rooted in their culture and were unified. Testament to that, Masuku said the number of people who attended Sibaya in 2023 was the highest he had ever witnessed.

Furthermore, the DPM said culture was another way of supporting the monarchy, which is the pillar of emaSwati and anchor of buSwati where respect was drawn.
