MBABANE – Who can dance better between Manzini and Mbabane?
Female dynamic DJs TrendTwins are hosting a dance derby between the two towns on Saturday at Olympia Africa Centre. The derby will feature five Eswatini choreographers. The choreographers are Sabza HB Mnisi, Thabiso Termie Mvulane, Noc’milo Sergy Dlamini, and Nkhosenhle Braly Mlangeni.
The TrendTwins are an Afro-house DJ group that consists of two young ladies, namely, Nkosenhle Dlamini and Nosimilo Dlamini, aged 25 and 29 years, respectively. When reached for comment, the duo said, “It’s not a competition but a dance movement, a way of learning new skills and improving them through Eswatini’s best dance choreographers. We actually want to grow the dance industry at eSwatini to bring the youth together through dance and showcase young talents to the world since dance is now trending.”
The duo went on to say, “Our aim is to promote and grow dance talent and gather the youth to keep them distracted from bad habits. It is another form of exercising and keeping them busy through dance, which limits the number of youth persistently visiting doctors because of, e.g., heart and lung cases. The whole point is to keep the youth active.”
The DJs went on to say that since there are so many cases of depression and anxiety, they have learned that dance can limit those situations because dance puts one in a good mood while you learn, move, and perform, which actually releases physical tension.
When asked if this was their first derby, the duo said, “We actually had the first episode on December 9, 2023; this coming one on Saturday will be our second dance episode. Anyone can come and enjoy the derby,” shared TrendTwins.
The duo recently secured an Oukitel Eswatini sponsorship, which manufactures smartphones, rugged phones, rugged tables, and portable power stations. They started as a dance group of six friends, then decided to be DJs. They were inspired by the likes of DJ Shimza, Caiiro, and Da Capo. They started the group in 2016.
The TrendTwins specialise in Afro-house, Gqom music, and dance. They have shared the stage with the likes of Sho Madjozi, Sjava, Master Kg, Black Motion, Tira, Kwesta, Dj Zinhle, Bholoja, Sands, Dj Fresh, Scorpion Kings, and many more.
They have performed internationally in Europe as dancers in countries such as Belgium, the Netherlands, and Spain.
The entry fee to the derby is E50. It will kick off at 10am and last until 4 p.m.
