MBABANE In a landmark move, the Workmen’s Compensation Bill 2022 has finally granted soldiers the right to claim compensation for injuries sustained while on duty.

This comes after the Senators passed the Workmen’s Compensation (Amendment) Bill of 2022 yesterday, which is expected to be gazetted in the coming years.

It marks a significant departure from the previous 1983 Act, which previously excluded members of the Umbutfo Eswatini Defence Force (UEDF) from claiming this right.

The new bill guarantees that soldiers will now be entitled to compensation for any work-related accidents or injuries, just like any other worker in the country. This means that they can receive financial support if they are injured or killed while serving their country.

This move has been celebrated by many, who see it as a long-overdue recognition of the sacrifices made by the country’s military personnel. It is hoped that this new law will bring greater security and peace of mind to those who serve in the UEDF.

Speaking on the issue, Senator Princess Tsandzile expressed how grateful she was about this bill, now that soldiers will get compensation. Also adding that the Umbutfo Eswatini Defence Force has been neglected for some time. The Workmen’s Compensation Bill 2022 is set to be formally enacted in the coming years, and it is expected to have a significant impact on the lives of those who serve in the UEDF. As the country moves forward, it is hoped that this new legislation will bring greater stability and security to all those who work to defend it.
