The heatwave at Shiselweni could not deter the spirits and energy and of the King, Queen Mother, Emakhosikati, Imbali, Spectators, Police and Vendors in participating in the Umhlanga Reed Dance at the Mbangweni Royal Residence.
Mbangweni was alive with colour, Bend and Pick clothing, maidens and positive energy from everyone. A lot of people came from all over the world including Ghana, United States, South Africa just to name a few to watch the dance. The turn up really turned out well and it looked like more of Imbali came out after seeing the success of the first Umhlanga at the Ludzidzini Royal Residence.
EPN conducted interviews with the imbali and found they had nothing but praise for their king, loyalty for their culture and also encouraged other maidens to preserve themselves and join them in next year’s reed dance. They even expressed that covid made it hard for them not to see other maidens with whom they share a sisterhood with and learn from each other.
