UN Eswatini Coordinator George Wachira said the Speech from the Throne, which was delivered last week Friday in the House of Assembly, touched on many different aspects of development of the country. According to Wachira, in a statement sent to various local media houses, some of the aspects were related to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Wachira said they were happy to realise that the King was passionate about developing the economy of the country. “The King also assured us that the country committed itself in making sure that it achieved the UN SDGs of 2030,” Wachira said. He said the UN Eswatini would continue to work with Government and the country at large to ensure that the SDGs were achieved.

The Coordinator said they would do this by working with Government in implementing the aspirations of Emaswati that they raised during Sibaya, which was held in October last year. He said the UN Eswatini would continue to work with Government in its five-year development plan.

Among the highlights from the Speech from the Throne was the issue of corruption. The King minced no words in commanding Government to ensure that individuals suspected of corruption were put behind bars. This command by His Majesty was heeded to by Govenrment when Prime Minister set up an Anti-Corruption Task Team to help the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) in fighting corruption in the country.

Another directive issued by the King was that no Liswati should die of lack of proper health care, starting from this coming financial year. The King also commanded that the construction of the International Convention Centre and Five Star Hotel (ICCFISH) should be finished this coming financial year.
