“The Senate, at its meeting held on the March 15, 2023, having noted that the strike action by members of the Association of Lecturers, Academic and Administrative Personnel (ALAAP) had not come to an end yet, resolved that The University should, in the interest of safety and security of staff and students, be closed with immediate effect until further notice, meaning that there should be no teaching and learning for all full time and part time students. Students should vacate the University premises by 11. 00 am March 16, 2023,” said Simelane.
In addition, it was said that registration should remain open until the closing date of Friday, March 31 2023 and Moodle should remain open so that those who may wish to gain access.
Interviewed students interviewed said they had mixed feelings about the whole situation but thanked the school for prioritising their safety.
Others mentioned that stopping lessons might be a setback but it will give the school time to attend to the problems at hand.
“We received the memo yes and we are just grateful we are given time to find safety and go home, these days anything can happen,” said one student.
Another student said, “We can still learn online, closing schools is not an option but with everything happening, I think the school put our safety first and we are grateful.”
Others went to express their views on their social media platforms where they expressed that they wished things at the school get resolved eventually.
