MBABANE– Since Eswatini is not out of danger from the predicted intense Tropical Cyclone Freddy, the Deputy Prime Minister (DPM) Themba Nhlanganiso Masuku, has said they do have a plan should the cyclone hit the country.
Masuku was responding to a question pertaining the livelihoods of pupils should the cyclone hit the country what is to happen to pupils in the country, to this DPM said pupils in the country were smart to catch up where they left off.
“No one should risk their lives with these rains if pupils can make it to school, they should go to school if it poses no danger and when they cannot they should not,” he said
In addition to that, he said pupils in the country had proven that they were capable and very smart considering their good results amid COVID-19 and the unrest.
Ministry of Education and Training Principal Secretary (PS) Bhekithemba Gama said he would not take anything away from what the DPM said.
“We will work on a suitable plan and see where it takes us when the situation or the cyclone hits,” said Gama briefly.
Meanwhile, the news about a cyclone was confirmed by Eswatini Meteorological Services Department during an advisory.
Forecaster Phephisa Sihlongonyane said currently, the centre of the cyclone was at the north of Mauritius, which is about 3 000 to 4 000 kilometres away from the Kingdom of Eswatini.
According to Sihlongonyane, for now, tracks of the directions that the storm would take were seen towards Madagascar and Mozambique.
He said the models they were using to monitor the tropical cyclone showed that it might go towards the north of the region, which was the central part of Mozambique along Beira and Nampula. Another model, he said, showed that the tropical cyclone could track South, coming towards Maputo Province.
