SITEKI – In the heart of the Mambane area, under Matsanjeni North Constituency in the Lubombo region, resides a remarkable farmer, the 57-year-old Thembisile Myeni.

Myeni is a woman that has ventured into sustainable agriculture by turning her backyard into an orchard. Her work has now caught the attention of the Co-operation for the Development of Emerging Countries (COSPE) with her innovative sustainable agricultural practices. The Italian Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) is now eager to witness her exceptional achievements first-hand.

Thembisile’s commitment to sustainable agriculture has transformed her orchard into a thriving oasis. Through her innovative techniques and dedication, she has achieved a positive turnover in her yield, ensuring both her family’s food security and a fresh supply of citrus fruits for local markets.

Growing up in a family of agriculture-loving farmers, her journey began with a profound understanding of the importance of sustainable practices in agriculture. By adopting environmentally friendly methods, she has not only minimized the impact on the ecosystem but also improved the quality of her produce. This has garnered attention from both her local community and substantial organisations like COSPE.

When interviewed, Myeni mentioned the support she gets from organisations like COSPE which keep her going. “I am very grateful for the things that organizations like COSPE help me with like the water tank I received from them not long ago which really helps in storing water, which I fetch from a nearby river for irrigation as I live in a place where water is scarce. They have also helped a lot in educating me about the agricultural methods I need in order to succeed in my farming practices, for that, I am grateful,” she said.

By carefully managing soil fertility, using organic fertilizers, and practicing crop rotation, she has been able to maintain the health and productivity of her farm. Additionally, she utilizes water-efficient irrigation methods, ensuring optimal resource utilization in Mambane, an area prone to water scarcity.

The impact of Make Thembisile’s efforts extends beyond her own farm. Her surplus citrus fruits not only meet her family’s needs but also contribute to the local market. This not only provides economic opportunities for her but also ensures access to fresh, nutritious produce for the community. “The produce does not only benefit me, but my neighbours as well because I often share it with my neighbours as I often produce more than enough.” She said.
