MBABANE – The governor of the Central Bank Dr Phil Mnisi has called for increased collaboration among various stakeholders in order to effectively combat money laundering and terrorist financing.
Last week, the Bank hosted a workshop on terrorist financing and targeted financial sanctions, which was facilitated by the Eastern Southern Africa Anti-Money Laundering Group (ESAAMLG). The workshop was aimed at enhancing the capacity of participants to effectively identify, report, and prevent the illicit financing of terrorism and related activities. The workshop took place at Sibane Sami Hotel and was attended by representatives from the banking sector, financial intelligence units, and other relevant authorities.
The training was designed to equip participants with the necessary knowledge and strategies to combat threats to the nation’s security. This included representatives from key industry stakeholders such as AML/CFT regulators, the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU), Financial Service Providers (FSPs), the Attorney General (AG), the Ministry of Finance, and other government ministries. The training was an important step in strengthening the nation’s ability to protect itself from financial crime and other threats to its security.
In his remarks, the Governor, who also serves as the Chairperson of the Council of the National Task Force, emphasized the urgent need for collaboration among all stakeholders in the relentless fight against Money Laundering and Terrorism Financing.
“We all have a role and obligation to play in our respective sectors to have a robust, healthy, and effective AML/CFT regime. We are confident that after this training we are all going back to our different institutions with knowledge and skills,” he said.
